"“Mission Timbaktu” is Bangladesh’s first Military thriller. It’s the first of its genre. We have always read and watched military thrillers of writers of USA or UK. Writers like Mark Owen, Andy Macnab, B. Abell Jurus and Gene Wentz. But we did not have our very own Military Thriller. Were the story circles around the lives of Officers and Soldiers of the Bangladesh Army. IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosion. The APC jumps up and rolls over to the side of the road. Capt Rashed was on the roof of the lead APC when the IED hit. He is thrown away few hundred meters. He survives the fall but is traped as sand covered him and he got stuck. UN forces and Terrorists started exchanging fire. This is how the book starts off. This is how this book is going give you adrenaline rush. Each page has one new surprise. Each pase has a new character that will make you think what is this character doing here, he/she was not here before. What's her/his role in this mission. Every introduction will make you visualize that character. I visualized Maj Cyrus like a Hell Commando. Expert in all weapon and hand to hand combat. Able tactician. But a humble down to earth human being with lots and lots of compassion. There are few books where the writers tried to feature Bangladesh Army but the terms and terminology were not accurate, the portrayal of the Bangladesh Army was fictional. But “Mission Timbaktu” is the very first book that is accurate to the point with the correct term and terminology. Nothing you read here in this book will sound like “This is like US Army.” I assure you this book gives you the actual picture (as much can be given while keeping the Armed Forces confidentiality intact) of what goes in the mind of a soldier and what goes in the mind of the officer leading those soldiers. Being the son of an Army officer who has fought in the birder and has been to two UN mission, I can relate to each and every emotion. Every procedures, protocols and every step and action are what in military term would be called "Text Book Perfect" My father conveyed the news of death of one of his trooper when he was in UN Mission Ivory Coast. Trooper died of illness but its neber easy to deliver the news. Back in 1999 when he fought in the border he lost troopers there too. Heard from him that it was the most hardest thing. To see your troops die and you have to inform their families. As you saw them at their last minute. The pain if the family members and how they feel. Everything was so well expressed. The pain, the grief, the anxiety and panic that someone's wife or mother feel when they know that their loved one is alive but his/her life is hanging by the thread. Knowing he/she is dead and died in the line of duty is getting closure and pride. But loved one is alive but captive is a pain that is unexplainable. But author explains it so well that the reader will feel their heart aching for Capt Rashed. Bangaldesh army has a long history of fighting and winning. We haven't fought war with any country other than our liberation war. But we have fought for peace and we have shed blood. You may call this a work of fiction but know this that there are 100 stories like these. Actual stories. People have said this could be “Black Hawk Down”. But let me tell you this is way better than “Black Hawk Down”. Black Hawk Down is a great book. But wjat it lacks is the emotion kn the home front. It shows all the emotion of a soldier. Many say a soldier has no emotion. But trust me they are the biggest emotional tragedies. They fight to protect whats waiting for them, they fight to protect what they left behind. Theu don't fight because they hate what's in front of them. Bangladesh Army has never fired until they have been fired upon first. But the officers and soldiers are trained in all manners to counteract all means of attack even if they are caught off guard. I will not call this fiction. This is what our officers and soldiers are facing everyday in dangerous areas such as Mali. We have lost brave souls in jungles of Congo. Hills of Sudan and on shores of Benin. These officers and troops are so much loved that at tge deat of these officers or troops the locals cried like the nation weeped. This book shows you just that. This book has another interesting part. Writer envisioned Bangladesh as a deadly force to be reckoned with in intelligence community as well. He has given an idea what we can become and how we will gradually and slowly take ourselves there. Do you think CIA, MI5 or other intelligence community got their ideas just over night?? Well No!! What do you think Ian Flaming did? Tom Clancy? Well these spy writers made people and the intelligence community believe that they can produce gadgets and try it for real. Mission Timbaktu introduces us to "Chanakkya". If you have read history then you know who he is. Like him, in our novel Chanakkya is an advisor. Expert in all technical know how. Knows all policy and loop holes and knows what to say and when to do what. If you think that this is a fiction, well readers you are wrong. This is one man's vision for his country. A dream that he has shared with us. He in his heart believes that Bangaldesh one day will have this kind of technology. Let's move to the part of terms and terminology and technical know how. Nothing to say here. A veteran himself has written this book. If you read carefully the author has shown how a true tactician uses Sun Tzu's Art of War in battlefield. There is nothing to say about this part other than I remain spellbound even when writing this review. The mission where Major Cyrus saves French Capt Cathy, author gave us how brave and by born soldiers our officers and troopers are. Not caring for own safety and life but for others and jumping in the fire despite knowing the imminent threat and which might only end in death, either of the terrorist or of the officer himself. Major Cyrus is what a die hard, dedicated and brave officers our Bangladesh Military Academy produces. Let me take you to the beginning of the book. Capt Rashed explaing the formation of the convoy is a crucial part for those who have no idea how Military vehicles move. Who is placed where and why. In the last part before the operation while checking the gear, Capt Amin expressed his grief on why they never get these kind of high end gears. Major Cyrus explains beautifully why Army doesn't issue these high tech gears to all other than Spec Ops. Here is also a beautiful and excellent know how for readers. Our economy is not that high that we will issue gears like US or UK troops to our troops. In my pre book review I mentioned about the movie "Extraction". Bangladesh army has been portrayed in the worst possible way in the Netflix movie “Extraction”. If they had portrayed Bangladesh Army the way it actually is well Chris Hemsworth aka Tyler Rake wouldn’t have made out of that building. I am serious. If you wanna read and visualize The Bangladesh Army. Well buy this book and start reading it. If anyone believes that any Mercenary or Merc as they are known can take down Bangladesh Army officers and troops alone, lemme give you a little news our officers are this much talented and good at their job that they secure 1st place in all joint operations training where ever they go. Be that US or UK. Why am I going that far. Our commandos took 12 minutes 47 seconds to clear Holy Artisan. Anythign more Netflix? Our Army is the only Army that has not fought after 71. But our officers are so well trained that they can take anyone down. I know few Bangaldeshi officers who wjen they were in UN mission im Haiti back in 95 their force commander who was a US Major Gen sent them to train with the US Army Rangers. They came back with praises and pats on they back for their extraordinary performance. I am proud to say that my father was one of them. If we had officer like this back than do you think we don't have them now? Finally, i have know Del H Khan uncle from Kholahati cantonment. A man with a vision. A man with a dream. Believe it or not you can use his book The Art Of War in your life to over come any problem. He is a gem. He can motivate you to reach the mountain and grabe that success. I remember when I was in class 10 preparing for my SSC Test, uncle said two valuable things, I remember them so clearly as if it happened yesterday. "Don't wait for the perfect opportunity to be successful. Grab knowledge and grab all the opportunities you get. Success will follow you soon after." And the other one was "Don't only focus on joining Army. Aim big, achieve big. Remember dreamers are believers and you can serve your country in may ways." It's an honor to write a review for your book. Thank you so much uncle for the advices you gave last day over cup of tea and thanks a million for the autograph. I had a great afternoon with you. Your office in one word is "Magnificent". "Mission Timbaktu" is a gold mine for those who love military novels. The readers will keep on reading and I can guarantee that you will want for more. "“আটচাকা বিশিষ্ট বিটিআর-৮০ মডেলের রাশিয়ান এপিসির দেয়াল দারুণ শক্ত; বন্দুক-রাইফেলের গুলি তো বটেই এমনকি রকেট লঞ্চারের গোলাও রুখে দিতে পারে। গুলি করে এপিসির চামড়া ভেদ করা অসম্ভব হলেও রাস্তায় পাতানো আইইডি (ইম্পোমাইজড এক্সপ্লোসিভ ডিভাইস) বিস্ফোরণের আঘাত সহ্য করার সাধ্য কোনো এপিসির নেই। লিড এপিসি আইইডিতে আঘাত করা মাত্র বিস্ফোরণটি ঘটে এবং ঠিক সেই মুহূর্তে পা ঝুলিয়ে এপিসির উপর বসা থাকা অবস্থায় বিস্ফোরণের ধাক্কায় ছিটকে রাস্তার একপাশে এসে পড়েছে সে; পরক্ষণেই এপিসির ভেতরে বসা বাকিদের কথা মনে পড়তেই আঁতকে উঠল রাশেদ!” ….. লিড এপিসির দুই জনকে গুরুতর আহত অবস্থায় উদ্ধার করা হলো, বাকিদের দেহ ছিন্নভিন্ন হয়ে গেছে। তাই ধরেই নেওয়া হলো বাকি ছয়জন মৃত্যুবরণ করেছেন। কিন্তু ডেডবডির ব্যাগগুলো দেখে প্যাট্রোল কমান্ডার মেজর সাইরাসের মনে হলো এতে ছয়জনের মৃতদেহ নেই। তিনি ধারণা করলেন রাশেদ নিখোঁজ হয়েছে। কন্টিনজেন্ট কমান্ডারকে তিনি তা জানালেন। কন্টিনজেন্ট কমান্ডার মেজর সাইরাসকে ছুটি দিয়ে ডেডবডিগুলোর সাথে বাংলাদেশে পাঠিয়ে দিলেন। কিছুদিনের মধ্যেই একটা ভিডিও ভাইরাল হলো যেটাতে দেখা গেল মালিয়ান টেররিস্টরা রাশেদকে ধরে রেখেছে। টেররিস্টদের দাবি ১০ দিনের মধ্যে মালি থেকে বাংলাদেশের সব শান্তিরক্ষী প্রত্যাহার করতে হবে নাহলে রাশেদের শিরশ্ছেদ করা হবে। ভিডিওর শেষে ক্যামেরা রাশেদের কাছে নিতেই রাশেদ অতি কষ্টে বলল, “সাইরাস স্যার বাঁচান।" সাথে সাথে সেই ভিডিও দেশে-বিদেশে অনেক আলোচনা-সমালোচনার জন্ম দিলো। বঙ্গভবনে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর অনুরোধে মিটিং ডাকা হলো; উপস্থিত ছিলেন রাষ্ট্রপতি, সেনাবাহিনী প্রধান, স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী, মেজর সাইরাস সহ আরো অনেকে। ভিডিও কনফারেন্সের মাধ্যমে মালির কন্টিনজেন্ট কমান্ডার কর্নেল আজাদ যুক্ত হলেন। তিনি মালির সামগ্রিক অবস্থার ব্রিফিং দিলেন। এখন বাংলাদেশের হাতে উপায় দুইটি। ১. মালি থেকে সব শান্তিরক্ষী প্রত্যাহার করতে হবে ২. সার্জিকাল স্ট্রাইক চালিয়ে রাশেদকে উদ্ধার করতে হবে কিন্তু সমস্যা হচ্ছে, বাংলাদেশ সেনাবাহিনী মালিতে গিয়েছে শান্তিরক্ষা মিশন পরিচালনা করতে, তাঁদের সাথে কোনো ভারী অস্ত্র নেই। আবার শান্তিরক্ষা মিশনকে প্রশ্নবিদ্ধ করে এমন কোনো কাজও করা যাবে না। তাছাড়া, সার্জিকাল স্ট্রাইক চালাতে হলে জাতিসংঘ এবং মালি সরকারের অনুমতি প্রয়োজন। পাশাপাশি মালিতে অবস্থিত ফ্রেঞ্চ কন্টিনজেন্টের সাহায্যও দরকার। ফ্রান্সের কাছে সহায়তা চাওয়া হলে তাঁরা কৌশল অবলম্বন করলেন। তাঁরা জানালেন, জাতিসংঘ এবং মালি সরকারের সিদ্ধান্ত জানার পর তাঁরা এ ব্যাপারে সিদ্ধান্ত দিবেন। মালি সরকার এবং জাতিসংঘের কাছে সার্জিকাল স্ট্রাইক চালানোর অনুমতি চাওয়া হলো। কিন্তু কোনো ইতিবাচক উত্তর পাওয়া গেলো না। এখন কী হবে? বাংলাদেশ কি সকল শান্তিরক্ষী প্রত্যাহার করে নিবে? নাকি রাশেদের শিরশ্ছেদ করা হবে? অথচ রাশেদ অপেক্ষায় আছে! তার দৃঢ় বিশ্বাস তার কমান্ডার মেজর সাইরাস তাকে উদ্ধার করতে আসবেই। কিন্তু সাইরাস জানে না কোথায় রাশেদকে বন্দি করে রাখা হয়েছে আর কীভাবে এই দুর্গম সাহারা মরুভূমিতে রাশেদকে খুঁজে বের করে উদ্ধার করবে। মেজর সাইরাস কি পারবে শেষতক ক্যাপ্টেন রাশেদকে উদ্ধার করে আনতে? উল্লেখ্য, ‘মিশন তিম্বক্তু’ বাংলাদেশের প্রথম মিলিটারি থ্রিলার। এই বইতে উল্লিখিত সকল স্থান, ঐতিহাসিক নিদর্শন এবং বৈজ্ঞানিক ব্যাখ্যা বাস্তব!"
